Cars Coming to SA in 2019
The automotive world is abuzz with news of the fresh new crossovers, coupes, double cabs and snarling supercars that’ll soon be gracing South Africa’s roads.
Here are 6 of the most anticipated new car releases in 2019.
Volkswagen T-Cross
Sporty, snazzy and compact, Volkswagen’s answer to the urban crossover launches in South Africa a little later this year. The sleek, macho looking small SUV features all the cool gadgetry and driver assistance systems of a modern, new age car.
The Volkswagen T-Cross is powered by four turbocharged engines capable of generating between 70 and 110kW of power. With a spacious interior, and up to 1281 litres of storage space, VW’s hot little kid on the block is likely to become a runaway best seller.
Ford Ranger Raptor
Large, muscular and predatory, the Ford Ranger Raptor is due on South Africa’s roads any day now. It’s an imposing off-road beast with a super-strengthened chassis, and 283mm of ground clearance.
A twin-turbo 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine is paired with a ten-speed transmission to pump out 157kW of power and 500Nm of torque. The high-end double cab is capable of hitting 100kph from an idling position in 10 seconds flat.
Jaguar I-PACE
With the sleek, feline lines and low-slung chassis synonymous with the Jaguar marque, the I-Pace SUV is due to be released in South Africa in the second quarter of 2019.
The luxurious all-wheel-drive vehicle is powered by a 90kW lithium-ion battery that can be recharged in under an hour using a custom 100kW charger.
Total output is a respectable 294kW and 696Nm of torque, and the pacey big cat is capable of reaching 0 to 100 kph in a snappy 4.8 seconds.
Aston Martin DBS Superleggera
The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera is a seriously beautiful supercar. It’s the latest creation by the famous British automotive brand and, along with a ribbed, hyper-muscular V-12 engine, it’s got the poise, elegance and sinuous styling of a thoroughbred stallion.
The 715-hp twin-turbo 5.2-litre engine is capable of leaping from 0 to 100kph in 3.4 seconds. With plush suede and leather interior, exotic good looks, and a top speed of 340kph, the Aston Martin DBS Superleggera is an exclusive big boy’s toy for South Africa’s super wealthy.
BMW M850i xDrive Coupe
With a low stance and ominous presence, the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe is a powerful all-wheel drive that’s as composed on the road as it is on rough, uneven tracks.
It’s a large, luxurious performance car powered by a 4.41-litre twin turbocharged V8 engine capable of producing a peak output of 390kW and 750Nm.
A smooth shifting 8-speed steptronic transmission, coupled with four-wheel drive steering, active suspension and electronic diffs, delivers optimal grip and acceleration on any road surface. The hunky new Bimmer is due in South Africa in March 2019.
Ferrari 488 Pista Spider
The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider is the latest Special Series model from the luxury Italian sports car manufacturer and, by all accounts, it’s a genuine showstopper. It’s a racey, pacey drop top that has a 3.9-litre twin-turbo V-8 engine, mated with a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, at its heart.
The powerful engine delivers peak outputs of 530kW of power and 770Nm of torque, a top speed of 340kph, and sprints from 0 to 100kph in 2.85 seconds. With a top speed of 340kph, the V-8 supercar is befitting of the legendary Prancing Horse badge.
The Spider, which has a price tag of more than R5 million, will be available in South Africa in the first quarter of 2019.
