Over the decades, a number of memorable car advertisements have tickled South Africans’ fancy, inspired nostalgia, impressed us with stunning local scenery or even caused our hearts to swell.

Corsa Lite
Who could forget the funny duo of Raj1 and Raj2, the mischievous Indian brothers who featured in a number of Corsa Lite adverts? Whether they’re breeding kudus to raise “bucks”, or experiencing a sunburn emergency, the brothers made this Corsa Lite campaign highly memorable.
VW Volksiebus
Who’s old enough to remember this VW Volksiebus ad featuring local musician and comedian, David Kramer?
Volkswagen Touareg
This memorable Volkswagen advert from a few years ago tells the endearing story of a father-son road trip in a Touareg. The story is backed by Arno Carsten’s hit song, “Another Universe”. The road trip theme allows for some great shots of local scenery.
Mazda 3
This advert was shot over a period of three days in Cape Town, and was the first ever locally produced Mazda commercial. Locations seen in the ad include stunning Chapman’s Peak Drive and Constantia Nek.

It has been a few years since we last saw Buddy – Toyota Automark’s canine mascot. However, many South Africans will remember the wise-cracking brindle boxer from a number of commercials, including ones for both Hilux and Corolla.

This ad for the Golf GTI is not only amusing but also features some awesome driving shots. It was filmed in Cape Town, and was ranked third in Millward Brown’s Best Liked Ads in 2008.

Ford Bantam
Some of the most successful ads are those that poke fun, and this Ford Bantam bakkie ad does just this. It makes clever use of the concept of BEE to reflect on modern-day South African society.
Toyota Hilux
It’s hard to not smile at the most recent Toyota Hilux advert. In the ad, three school boys argue about whose dad’s Hilux is “tougher-er”, as we see the Hilux tow increasingly larger buses along a dirt road.
