American filmmaker Michael Bay once claimed that fast cars are his only vice. Hopefully someone has told him about Bugatti’s exceptional handiwork.

Petrol heads and rookie car enthusiasts alike stirred with excitement when one of the world’s most expensive cars officially hit the road. The Bugatti La Voiture Noire is a one-off and comes with a hefty price tag of over $18 million.

Debut of the Bugatti La Voiture Noire

Although previously rumoured to be Christiano Ronaldo, the owner of the car is still a mystery. The La Voiture made its public debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and as expected, heads turned.

Officially the world’s most expensive car in 2019, the La Voiture was built to celebrate Bugatti’s 110th anniversary.

Since then, the vehicle has been bumped out of its position as the world’s priciest car by the exclusive build, one-of-a-kind, Rolls-Royce La Rose Noire Droptail (which commanded a price north of $32 million).

Nonetheless, La Voiture is a beauty, with a value not to be sneezed at.

La Voiture Noire features

The car brings with it “speed, technology, luxury and aesthetics forward to a near era,” says Bugatti president Stephan Winkelmann.

The La Voiture has all the features one would expect from a car of its caliber. The sportscar has a hand-built carbon fibre body, 8-litre engine and 1500 brake horsepower. It’s spectacular and it’s fast.

Design of the Bugatti La Voiture Noire

The La Voiture is actually a modern interpretation of the classic Bugatti Type 57. However, Winkelmann notes that the car is far more than this. “It is a feast of aesthetics,” he says.

Aesthetically, the La Voiture is elegant to a fault. The car is characterised by its entirely black exterior, with no distracting lines to take away from its sophisticated minimalism.

Prior to the unveiling of the La Voiture, Bugatti released a few early sketches of the design.

“Every single component has been handcrafted and the carbon fibre body has a deep black gloss only interrupted by the ultra-fine fibre structure. This is a material that has been handled perfectly,” says designer Etienne Salomé.

Background to the design of La Voiture Noire

The La Voiture Noire actually dates back to the Atlantic from the 1930s. The Atlantic is a generic name that was given to a run of five vehicles, each individually built for specific buyers.

Something you may not know? The original La Voiture vanished in 1941 before the German invasion during the Second World War. It’s still nowhere to be found.

This vanishing remains one of the most mysterious vehicle disappearances in history, leaving enthusiasts scratching their heads 80 years on.

With a price tag that surpasses the Rolls-Royce Sweptail – previously the most expensive car in the world – the Bugatti La Voiture Noire is in a league of its own.
