The World’s Fastest Car: Meet the Bugatti Chiron
Bugatti’s newest creation – the limited edition $2.6-million Chiron – leaves its competitors in the dust.
This 420 km/h, 1 103 kW beast retains the fundamentals of its predecessor, the Bugatti Veyron, but is faster, more powerful and more aerodynamic. It’s built to bend physics to the limit.
The Bugatti Chiron engine
Designed for peak performance, the Chiron’s engine is modelled on the Veyron’s 8-litre sixteen-cylinder engine, but with a 25 % increase in power. The result is a car that produces 1 103 kW of engine power and 1 600 Nm of torque, and can reportedly reach a mind-boggling speed of 463 km/h (although it’s electronically limited to 420 km/h for safety purposes).
The Bugatti Chiron can reach 96 km/h in 2 seconds flat. At a constant maximum speed, it can drain its 100-litre tank in 9 seconds – an impressive 3 seconds faster than the Veyron.
The power train
Naturally, the Chiron’s power-train is super-sized. The air cooling system pumps 60 000 litres of air through the engine per minute, and the coolant pump circulates 800 litres at the same rate.
To prevent overheating, the design includes air dams in the quad LED headlights, and a cooling intake in the signature “Bugatti Line” curve down the side of the car. The rear end of the car is also designed to reduce drag and create a suction effect, drawing hot air off the engine.
Unlike its hybrid competitors – the Porsche 918 Spyder, McLaren P1 and LaFerrari – the Chiron relies entirely on fossil fuels. According to the car’s creators, this is because making the Chiron a hybrid would have added unnecessary weight and required additional space.
Despite being both taller and longer than the Veyron, the Chiron’s carbon-fibre body, with carbon-fibre rear-subframe, is 8 kilograms lighter than its predecessor.
The brakes
With great speed, comes a need for larger brakes. The front and rear discs of the Chiron are 20 mm larger and 2 mm thicker than those of the Veyron, and are made from wear-resistant carbon silicon carbide.
Clutch improvements
Other improvements on the Veyron include wider tyres, larger rims, and better clutch performance. Like the Veyron, the Chiron’s torque is routed through all four of its wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The car’s creators claim that the Chiron is fitted with the “largest, highest-performing” clutches of any car ever. As the wheels are exposed to a mammoth centrifugal force of 3 800 G, the Chiron’s tyres are also 14 percent wider at the front, and 12 percent wider at the rear than those of the Veyron. They’re wrapped around 20-inch rims in the front and 21-inch rims in the back.
The Bugatti Chiron interior
The Bugatti Chiron features a completely redesigned interior, with what is reportedly the longest light conductor used in the history of automaking, carbon-fibre ribbing, aluminium dials, leather upholstery, speakers with one carat diamond tweeters and WiFi.
Of the 500 Bugatti Chirons scheduled for production, more than 200 have already been purchased by customers from around the world.
