Classic cars as assets of value
According to Knight Frank’s 2023 Wealth Report, classic cars achieved an overall asset value increase of 25%.
This is a remarkable recovery after the slow years of the pandemic, which saw global cancellation of almost all classic car shows and auctions.
Over a ten-year period, classic cars have appreciated by as much as 185%. This makes them one of the top-performing investments of passion across all luxury asset types.
What qualifies as a classic car?
A classic car is any iconic model that has passed a certain age. There’s no universal agreement on what this age is – but for the most part, cars have to be at least three decades old to qualify as classics.
Many classic cars feature engineering, performance and/or styling that was innovative at the time.
Some well-known examples are the Mercedes Gullwing, Aston Martin DB4 and E-Type Jag.
Unlocking the value of a classic car (without selling it)
The value embedded in a classic car is a useful tool for raising capital. Rather than selling an appreciating asset, the vehicle can act as collateral and unlock funding on a recurring basis.
At Pawn My Car, we recognise the intrinsic worth of collectible cars as security and have processed vehicle-backed loans of up to R10 million and more – within 24 hours.

How a loan against a classic car works
Pawn My car offers a discrete loan application process via our call centre and online platform. Once contact has been made outlining the vehicle’s details, we make an indicative offer of available financing.
If the offer is acceptable, the car is physically appraised at a Pawn My Car branch and a loan agreement is signed.
At this point, the required documents are handed over, the classic car is safely stored for the duration of the loan term, and the capital is transferred into the registered owner’s bank account.
As funding is secured, we don’t take employment status, credit rating or financial history into account.
Credit agencies are not privy to the loan agreement and, provided the car is debt-free and registered to the individual applying for the loan, it can be used to raise short-term funding – just like that.
Pawn My Car offers loans against classic cars in South Africa, as well as loans against other vehicles – from cars and bakkies to trucks and even boats. Our process is transparent, fast and completely discreet. For more information, contact us on 0861 112 866 or simply complete and submit our online application form.
